Summer Stewardship Assistant

One Summer Student position is available in Christina Lake. The successful student will work under the mentorship and guidance of our Stewardship Coordinator for a 16 week period during May through August (term may be amended to suit availability of successful candidate and may vary depending on unforeseen changes to the current Covid-19 Public Health restrictions).

Start Date: May 10, 2021 (tentative)
End Date: August 27, 2021 (tentative)
Rate of Pay: $18.75 per hour plus 4% holiday pay.
Location: Office & Interpretive Gallery (1675 Highway 3, Christina Lake)
Field activities (primarily within the Christina Lake Watershed, Regional District of Kootenay Boundary)

Applicants must meet these Canada Summer Jobs program eligibility requirements:
• Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
• Be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or persons to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the immigration and refugee protection act; and
• Have a valid social insurance number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.
Mandatory eligibility requirements for position:
• A valid BC Driver’s License, vehicle, and be willing to provide a driver’s abstract.
• Required to work a flexible 32 hour work week (including some evenings and weekends) for the full 16 week period.
• Must provide their own personal outdoor work gear, this includes items such as: work boots, rain gear and sun protection. Personal protective safety gear will be provided by the employer as required for any specialized tasks.
• Must be comfortable with interacting with the public and working with children (Note: all Covid-19 restrictions will be followed).
• Must be comfortable working on and near water.

Preferred Experience:
• Have completed or be pursuing a post-secondary education in the natural sciences and/or technology.
• Comfortable in an office environment; experience with Microsoft office an asset.
• Previous experience working outdoors in all weather conditions (either volunteer or paid)
• Knowledge and interest in environmental stewardship initiatives
• Knowledge and interest in local flora and fauna
• First Aid Level 1

Position Description:
The Christina Lake Stewardship Society (CLSS) is a non-profit charitable organization located at the Welcome Centre in Christina Lake. The mandate of the Society is to maintain the quality and health of the Christina Lake Watershed and local environment and to promote responsible resource use. During the summer, CLSS runs various education and monitoring programs.

Community outreach and education activities make up a large part of our summer activities* and include:
• Communicating with visitors in the Interpretive Gallery to convey information about species at risk, human wildlife interactions, invasive species, etc.;
• Conducting informal interviews to gathering boater information at the Texas Creek Boat Launch Kiosk;
• Conducting Solar Aquatic System (SAS) tours;
• Assisting with our booth at community events
• Assisting in developing and leading the weekly Summer Youth Education program activities.
*Note: Amount of Community Outreach activities will vary depending on current Covid-19 health restrictions.
The summer field projects consist of:
• Water quality and invasive mussel sampling and reporting;
• Aquatic plant maintenance and upkeep of SAS building;
• Monitoring of kokanee habitat and initial kokanee enumerations;
• Growing native plant species for restoration sites and upkeep of our business entrance, native plant nursery, deer-resistant and pollinator gardens.

The Christina Lake Stewardship Society also works with various other environmental protection, monitoring and enhancement groups and organizations within the boundary.
Work Tasks and Responsibilities:
• Research and data compilation
• Environmental monitoring & sampling
• Develop and host youth workshops and assist with special events
• Public outreach & communication
• Prepare media releases and other communications
• Report writing
• Update displays in interpretive gallery and various kiosks
• Organize volunteers for field work
• To be provided by the CLSS Stewardship Coordinator
