Gallery 2 – Grand Forks Art Gallery is seeking a Collections Assistant to assist with support for the gallery’s permanent collection.

The ideal candidate will have a background and demonstrated knowledge – through education and volunteer or previous employment – in collections management, fine arts, art history, curatorial studies, or museum studies. The candidate is currently enrolled in post-secondary studies and is intending to return to school in the fall semester, preferably in the field of art history, museum studies, or another field related to art and culture.

The ideal candidate will exhibit strong organizational and social skills, responsibility and reliability, a positive attitude, creativity, enthusiasm, and a willingness to learn. They must be able to conduct themselves in a friendly, professional manner and demonstrate excellent time management skills. They must also have excellent communication and writing skills. The candidate will have the ability to work independently and in a team, with an emphasis on critical thinking, attention to detail, information accuracy, and enthusiasm for art and history. It is preferred that the candidate have some prior experience with collections management, information management, and digital databases.

Focusing on practical, project-based collections management, the position is designed to expand the candidate’s understanding of the gallery’s day-to-day operations, introduce them to the various works of art in the gallery’s permanent collection, complete a focused project revolving around inventorying the collection, and prepare the candidate for a position in a museum related industry.

The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team of creative professionals including the gallery’s Director/Curator, and Registrar who will guide, supervise, and work with the Collections Assistant. The Collections Assistant’s primary responsibility will be to assist in cataloguing, arranging, and describing collection objects and assist in the maintenance of collections documentation. Daily tasks will include a range of activities including re-housing, re-filing, cataloguing objects, as well as database entry.

This position is being hired through Young Canada Works, and the following eligibility requirements must also be met:

  • be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada;
  • be legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
  • meet the specific eligibility criteria of the program to which you apply;
  • be registered in the YCW online candidate inventory;
  • be willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment; and
  • not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) during the YCW work assignment.
  • have registered as a full-time student in the semester preceding the YCW job (as defined by their educational institution); and
  • intend to return to full-time studies in the semester immediately following the YCW job.



Terms of Employment: 
This position is from May 11 to August 31, 2021.
Wage is $17/hour, 35 hours a week.
