Boundary Family Services (BFS) is inviting applications for the position of Aboriginal Family Support Worker.  This is a 15 hour per week position that must be worked within a flexible schedule that may include some evening and weekend work.  The purpose of this position is to promote healthy family functioning and to work with Aboriginal families to reduce risk to children through support to children, youth and families.

Applicants must have a vehicle in good working order and be able to travel within the Boundary area, from Christina Lake to Beaverdell, as a part of the position.  Criminal record check and driver’s abstract will be required. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct service to families on an individual, family or group basis by providing support, advocacy, guidance, education and connection to culture
  • Work in collaboration with other service partners such as Social Workers, Support Workers, School Staff and Counsellors
  • Work with the direction of a Clinical Supervisor
  • Collaborate with the Aboriginal Community and other partners that are involved with Aboriginal cultural support and development
  • Promote a strong, positive self image for Aboriginal families by acting as a role model
Specific Skills Required: 

Job Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to recognize and support the unique cultural and social issues associated with Aboriginal people
  • Knowledge and experience with group process and facilitation techniques within both the Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal culture
  • Demonstrate ability to work both independently and within a team
  • Well developed oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Good computer skills along with report writing and documentation skills
  • Demonstrated advocacy and support for all participants with the ability to work in a diverse environment within family and within the community
  • Commitment to quality improvement to maintain accreditation standards
  • Demonstrated commitment to a forthright and affirmative approach to human rights

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree in a Human Services field or Diploma and equivalent related experience
  • Two years of recent related experience
  • Experience with Aboriginal programs that strengthen the family an asset
